갑자기 덴젤 워싱턴의 이 말이 가슴에 팍 와 닿았다.
“Some of these people make me sick. But a law’s been broken here. You do remember the law, don’t you?”
영화 ‘필라델피아’의 한 장면. 게이이자 에이즈 환자인 앤드류 (톰 행크스)의 변호사인 덴젤 워싱턴이 술집에서 그에게 게이를 변호한다고 비아냥 거리는 한 남자에게 쏘아붙인 대사다. 이 말을 듣는 순간, 한동안 이글루스를 뜨겁게 달구었던 게이혐오표현의 자유에 대한 논쟁이 생각났다. 더불어 그 논쟁에 대한 정답이 바로 덴젤 워싱턴의 저 대사가 아닐까 하는 생각도. 필라델피아.. 나온지 15년이 지난 영화인데 지금 보아도 가슴 뭉클한 명화다. 게이를 혐오하는 분들은 꼭 보셨으면 하는 영화다.
‘필라델피아’가 오늘따라 더 마음에 와 닿는 이유는 아마도 ‘아바타’를 보고 온 직후라 그런 것 같다.
드디어 아바타를 보았다. 보았는데 사실 기대에는 못미친 영화였다. S는 무지 마음에 들었다고 하는데, 나는 시각적인 즐거움 외엔 별다른 감흥을 느끼지 못했다. 두 시간 반 동안 즐겁게 보긴 했지만 기억에 남거나 열번, 백번을 다시 보고 싶지는 않을 것 같은 영화랄까.
아바타를 보고 집에 와서 티비를 켜니 ‘필라델피아’가 시작되고 있길래 잠시 볼까 하고 앉았다가 계속 보고 말았다. 아바타와는 전혀 다른 류의 영화라 비교하긴 무리가 있겠지만, 나는 아직까지는 CG와 외계인이 주인공인 영화보다는 인간적, 현실적인 영화가 좋다. 어떤 특수효과가 없어도, 두 주인공의 미세한 표정 연기만 바라보고 있어도 시간가는줄 모르겠으니..
아바타의 눈을 황홀하게 하는 입체영상보다, 창백한 톰 행크스의 얼굴, 농담스럽다가도 진지해지는 덴젤 워싱턴, 그 어느 영화에서보다 매력적인 안토니오 반데라스, 그리고 증언대에 서는 한 사람 한 사람의 긴장한 모습, 그런 영상이 내 기억 속엔 훨씬 더 강렬하게 남는다. 역시 영화를 명화로 만드는 건 배우의 연기력과 탄탄한 스토리라는 나의 믿음을 다시 확인했다.
영화보던 중 혼자보기 아까워서…
I sat through Avatar with my two sons after flying in from London on a business trip. Because my flight was delayed and I had promised my sons that I would take them to see Avatar, we wind up going to the midnight showing. My kids are 12 and 14 years old. Although I was watching Avatar in digital 3-D with special effects flying across my face I couldn’t help but dozing off from my long flight back. In between my short naps I looked at my sons watching this movie in a total be-wilderment and awe. I have never seen the expressions as such in their faces before. Then I remembered back to my childhood watching Star Wars. How it was so special and different from any other movie experience I had experienced. How I was totally mesmerized by this movie from start to the end. I can sense that this was what my two sons were experiencing while watching Avatar.
Like you I do prefer melodramatic movies (it shows our age) and Tom Hanks is without a doubt one of my all time best actor. However, I think Avatar did something to the audience that Star Wars did nearly 30 years ago. It gave a totally new meaning to movie-going experience. Now all movies will have to live up to the standard of Avatar like Star Wars ands Matrix trilogy before them.
Posted by Han Guk Jae | 22. Jan, 2010, 10:36 amI totally agree that Avatar set such a high standard for technical and graphical aspects of movies, especially SF movies. But the reason I loved Matrix or Star Wars (original trilogy) more than Avatar is they have way better stories and characters in my opinion. I think Avatar gave me more of an impression that I can usually get from the video games. There was no character I really appreciated in it, but there was great experience.
Avatar is definitely a different style of film and it may not be fair to compare it with other movies. I just say I like movies with good stories and characters.
And Thank you for reminding me of my age.
I am glad and surprised that there is a reader of my blog who is actually in my generation.
